4 Weeks Pregnant: Your Tiny Miracle Begins

4 Weeks Pregnant: Your Tiny Miracle Begins

Finding out you’re pregnant can be one of those moments you remember forever. At four weeks pregnant, you may have only just discovered those two little lines on a pregnancy test, or you might still have absolutely no idea that you’re pregnant!

Either way, an incredible amount is already happening behind the scenes.

Welcome to Week 4 of our Week by Week Pregnancy Journey. Each week, we’ll be following your growing baby, looking at the changes you may notice in your own body and sharing a few gentle tips from one mum to another.

What is happening to your baby at 4 weeks pregnant?

Your baby is still incredibly tiny at four weeks. Following fertilisation and implantation, the group of cells that will eventually become your baby is developing rapidly. The foundations for some of the most important parts of your baby's body are beginning to form.

It can seem almost impossible to believe that so much is happening when, from the outside, absolutely nothing looks different!

How might you feel at 4 weeks pregnant?

This is where pregnancy can be very different from one woman to another. You might already feel different, or you might feel exactly the same as you did a few weeks ago.

Some women notice things such as:

  • Tender or sore breasts
  • Feeling unusually tired
  • Mild cramping
  • Bloating
  • Needing to wee more often
  • Changes in smell or taste
  • Feeling more emotional than usual
  • A missed period

And some mums have no noticeable symptoms at all. Every pregnancy is different, so try not to compare your symptoms, or lack of them, with somebody else's.

Have you taken a pregnancy test?

For many mums, Week 4 is when everything suddenly becomes real.

Your period doesn't arrive. You take a pregnancy test. You wait for what feels like an eternity…

And then there they are.

Two lines.

Excitement, disbelief, happiness, nerves and about a hundred other emotions can arrive all at once. You don't have to have everything figured out today. This is only the beginning.

From one mum to another

One of the hardest things about those first few weeks can be keeping such enormous news to yourself. You might want to tell everyone immediately, or you might prefer to keep your little secret between you and your partner for a while.

There isn't a right time to announce a pregnancy. It is a personal decision and you should do whatever feels comfortable for you. And when you are ready to share your wonderful news, you can make the moment one you'll remember forever.
